Christmas week!

We went down to the temple last week to see all the lights. We were so lucky to have Michael and Megan with us again it's almost a tradition! Even when they live out of state we managed to work it out. It was cold! Super cold! I bundled Greyson up in my coat and out a hat on him that fell over his eyes. That made him whine a little but then he just fell asleep. It was tight in there but I bet he was the warmest of the bunch. He has red, warm cheekers, maybe it was too warm in there! It was a fun adventure. In and out! Hard to take it all in and enjoy it when I am worried about 100 fingers and toes! (And that doesn't even count mine!)

Every time we drive by the government building of the city just to the Southwest of us, Duncan asks if it's where Matthew and I got married so it was fun to actually tell him THAT was the place. Again... I think we did last year too!

Duncan and Dylan's school program was last week too. Last day of the school year. Duncan did a good job but Dylan wasn't all about it. You kind of have to work hard to keep her entertained, in turn nearly making a fool of yourself which Shelley didn't mind at all last year but I don't think her new teacher likes too much. Dylan took off about 15 seconds into the first song and went to Mrs. D. who was leading and just hung out by her. Oh well, I thought it was cute! I think it's good they make an attempt at east.

About school, talking to my grandma Shirley put some sense into my longing for last year's special ed teacher Shelley. She said, as with all kids, "you aren't going to like their teachers every year". Not that I don't like her teacher but... And Grandma Shirley added... "The problem is getting the best teacher FIRST!" No kidding right? Her teacher would be super fantastic if she were first! So my longing makes this year's teacher look bad but that is not the case, it's just that she is no Shelley! Great, I have 13 more years of this now!

I digress... So the program was super cute. Duncan did a good job singing with everyone and having a good time. He was a good loud singer, even without a bribe (Only because I forgot to do it!). After we got a snowman project to take home, I took two... One for each D. I am not sure they expected me to, but I knew if I brought only one home and we did it, Ian would flip so Dylan usually... Uhmm... shares her projects. The same with the candy and treats. I hate when they don't include them in her bag, it's a big old mess. Ian wants to be in school too! It's just the way it goes I know, but you try and reason with a three year old! A stubborn one at that! I wish I had better pictures of the program but my camera was acting funny. I am not sure exactly what my adorable husband does with it when he has it but I end up having to reset it after nearly every time he borrows it. I didn't know it was acting funny, because... Well... He had it last. I can look back through the pictures and see exactly where it happened too. No clue how. Anyway, bummer on the program pics.

Matthew took Ian shopping and he came home and told me if we ever get divorced he gets Ian. Apparently Ian is quite the charmer, the ladies love him! No doubt though, he is charming and cute, just like his dad! I told Matthew if he hadn't of killed his front tooth he would be getting tens instead of nines! (Accusing him of killing Ian's tooth has been a running joke between us.)

On Christmas Eve mom, Bob and Beth came over for some potato soup and brought the salad and treats. We got bread bowls but the bread bowls weren't nearly as good as good old French bread I don't think. But everyone else either lied, liked them, or didn't mind! We opened presents and I am ridiculously excited about a new steak knife set, like... Crazy excited... Remember when I got the new pans? Yea, that. I am old I guess! Not to mention all the other great stuff we got!

Afterwards we packed up and went to see Grandma LouAnn and Co. That's where we have gone to open jammies the last several years in a row. Oh my word, getting pictures of them in their new jammies was insane!! Like, terrible! I had the camera and Matthew, Melissa AND LouAnn were all trying to get them all to hold still, just for a second and get themselves out of the frame. Crazy! They are on Meggie's camera since I forgot mine and she will email them to me, probably when they get home so it will be a while. I can't wait though, I bet there are some doozies! Oye!

The biggest pain was Asher! He is crazy! There is a reason why we are calling him "The Asher-cane" lately, because he is crazy! He destroys everything in his path! Duncan was the same way, always into things, exploring, finding things... The only difference is that Duncan did have some regard for others. He is a pleaser and he TRIES to do the right thing. Asher couldn't care less. Melissa said its like he gives you the finger and keeps going! He is in to EVERYTHING! It's so hard keeping track of him when we are at LouAnn's and even worse when it's crowded like it was on Christmas Day. I went in to nurse Greyson and came out to Asher in the high chair. I would have fed him cookies for an hour if it would have worked though and apparently I wasn't the only one! He is so blasted CUTE though!

Ian loved his Spiderman jammies. He kept saying "Pidaman jammies! Dey ma favrite ones!" We didn't get home until 10 and we didn't lose a single child to sleep on the way home, the excitement was in the air! We had a lot of work to do still! A late start made for an early morning and then Santa came. It looked beautiful with the piles of joy with the cute stockings all laid out in wait for the kids. Duncan came up first and Matthew sent him down to get Ian. I think it was 7:30 which is even a little late for them. (Thanks for that guys!)

Asher, Greyson and Dylan were sound asleep and we just let that go which we enjoyed opening presents with the big boys. They had so much fun. It was just the right amount of things I think! The other kids trickled out over the next hour or so and got to open and play with their toys as well. It was fun!

We took all the no-napped monkeys to Grandma LouAnn's for more fun in the afternoon. I told the sisters to all forgive me for the no napped kids and, well... The no napped me too! We came home with great presents for all the kids. Grandma got Duncan a couple of trucks, larger ones, with beds... And a cool box full of nickels. Haha! Perfect for him! Random! But he thought he was the luckiest kid there!

Asher got a tiny wagon which was so good, apparently, that every one of the one year olds needed it, right now, all at the same time. Great screams and cries followed. Lots of pushing, pulling and yelling. It was awesome. Epic even. Finally when no one was touching it Kristen (who was the gift-er) pulled it up and hid it! Haha!

Grandma LouAnn had a train going around her tree and you can imagine Asher and that! So we would keep stopping it and parking it behind the tree and Ian kept saying "It not puffing! It not puffing! Train not puffing!" To which we explained we needed to park it because of the babies which he seemed to understand.

Duncan and Ian got a touch of the flu or something the other day. It was fast but it was somewhat violent and gross. Charlotte had something the other night here and we may have gotten the same thing. They have a cough too so who knows. It seemed the upset stomach portion didn't last very long thank goodness. Ian's the only one where it carried over to the next day but he is a gagger so that could be cough related. Its really like that cough nastiness that we just got over came back!! I had scrubbed and cleaned the humidifiers and now they have to come back out again. Same kids, all but Greyson, have a cough. Dylan's even in a bad way again. What in the world? Need a breather here! At least Matthew isn't out of town... for now!

Owen came to our house right at bed time the other night and man, he and Asher are kind of both at the "mine!" independent play stage and Wowza. There is not a lot of love lost between the two right now! They want what the other one has and that's that! No negotiation! I think it's hilarious, what can you do? There is no reasoning and if you stop them they will just start again over another toy!

We asked Duncan if he wanted another baby and he said "Noooo! Let's keep this baby!" Not exactly what we meant but I am glad he likes this baby! Ian just said "yes!!" Ian would have 20 more I think! Good thing I am kidding! Don't worrry!

Mom is in the picture!

So is dad! I love this shot and I think we do it every year.

My kid has freakishly huge eyes...

This is her "Are we done yet?" face.

Mom is in the picture! (Again! I get a pat on the back next time you see me!) This is the only picture of Greyson. We traded hats, the new one covered his eyes, and it was all over.

Obligatory family shot in front of the temple. Not sure what Matthew was doing...

Mark, Get set...

Holla! Christmas morning! Asher opening.

Ian opening

Asher pounding! Thanks Grandma Kathy! Tap tap tap tap tap tap

This is happy!

Me thinks Santa knew Duncan is relentless in his asking to play with mommy's crafting ornament things...

Annnnnd, then they all got sick. Watching Brave, notice Duncan's sick cup...

From what I understand, everyone who has these chairs does this. Though the first think Aunt Meggie did was sit in it and try to spin. It was super fabulous!

Best. Toy. Ever. (Besides Legos...) "B. Symphony in B", Google it.

Family pics and a little catch up

I got all my Christmas cards out! Better late(er) than never right? I usually like to get them out nearer to the beginning of the month to get them out of the way but I was holding out for our family pictures.

In the past we have had Ami take a group picture when we go get our Christmas tree but guess what? We didn't get a tree until a few nights ago and we certainly didn't go with the rest of the family. Bummer too, I kind of like the tradition of going with the Anderson's, taking over some poor tree lot somewhere with cold, running children but alas, this year it was not to be. A tree was almost "not to be" but Matthew and Duncan ran an errand in Saturday and swung by to pick one up. We blame his work schedule and of course, the traveling.

Our new decoration brought a big ugly bug with it. I wish I was kidding. But... Being the tough awesome mom I am, I captured it in a cup, and transferred it to a baggy so my darling boys (including my husband) could look at it in great detail under a microscope. Gross but cool I suppose. I catch very strange looking one inch long bugs and the best my husband has done is a fly. It's cool, it's cool... Let's not compete because that is the best I got! Yuck. The bugcicle is in the freezer right now. Next to my food. Nom nom.

I have been making lots and lots of ornaments and it's been fun. I am afraid after about his week there will be an ornament dry spell but I have lots of nieces and nephews who would like some too. So many that it might take until next Christmas to make them all!

I bought a lot of charms off eBay to have on hand in case anyone wants something or they fit and included in the pack was a little angel charm and the back said "made for an angel" and I knew, as soon as I saw it, which angel I would make an ornament for. Cute little Emily, who I posted about here, is spending her first Christmas heaven and I know it's hard for her family. Especially because they were in-patient last year and somehow misplaced all of the ornaments that they had on her tree. I sent her mom a note, totally being a stalker, and asked for their address. That was the errand Matthew and Duncan were doing they were mailing off her ornament. I can't wait for her to get it! I hope they love it.

Michael and Megan are in town for three weeks for Christmas and its just like old times, except two more kids and with that, mass chaos. We tried to play games the other night and it was a big fat fail. I am sure we will have another opportunity but wow... Seven kids five and under makes for a great time.

Mason's blessing was last Sunday and we made it! (I think it was Owen's we missed because we were late but don't remind them.) We didn't have much time to spare and we were so grateful to see Shannon and Tracy on the back row with open arms. Asher got the naughty baby award as he was the most to handle for the hour. Not helping that he likes to yell and throw things when he doesn't get his way. Good times. Charlotte and Duncan played, Shannon had Greyson, someone took Ian and Kristen played with Dylan in the hall. Meanwhile Asa and I made best friends over a few pretzel sticks. Nom nom nom (No really, that's what he does when he eats, it's adorable...)

Dylan is finally off if the antibiotics for her ear infections. We are pretty sure the antibiotic made her drooly. Like, change her bib every couple of hours and her onsie a couple times a day because everything is so drenched drooly. Not sure if this is like a side effect of the med or something about the med makes her uncomfortable and drool but oye. She has been off the antibiotic about two and a half days and we could see a huge difference after only one day. We will have to try and remember this about Cefdinir and see if it happens again.

Meanwhile everyone here seems to be healthy now. She is 100% other than her wobbly legs as she gets back into the swing of things. Greyson was really sick too but only for a few bad nights. Bad bad though, like, keep me awake because I need to watch your every move, bad. Fortunately though he didn't fever like the others and it seemed to go away a lot more quickly.

Ian told me he loves me and I said "I love you too!" to which he replied "I love you three!" So cute. That little turkey. He is talking so well now we can understand nearly everything he says. It's been so nice.

We went to see Santa last week at an elementary school. We did the same thing last year and it was awesome! We were running later but got there just in nick of time before Santa packed everything up and took off. Phew! I was texting one of my friend that was there the whole time to let her know we were on our way and to stall them! Thank goodness they did. We are such a pain. We got some cute pictures I am sure, I even got a preview one by email. Asher is not smiling, because he thought being in a school gym was the coolest thing ever and didn't want to sit still. I remember those days...

Done and Done!

Handsome big boy

Sorry about the up the nose shoton Greyson, but Asher is smiling so I will take it!

I love this face! Both of them!

Cute smile. He scratched his nose too! And by this point I thought I got the sharp edges!

Ian's going in for a kiss, Duncan suspects nothing...

They played in the snow with daddy and then had some hot chocolate

Someone's tired (and I don't mean the sleeping one...)

Asher spent all the time after this, ever since, taking things OFF the tree.

Ian torturing Duncan by *gasp* opening his own birthday presents!

Duncan was a wee but excited, Asher? Not so much...

Wow! What a week!

That's not the first time I have used that title for a blog post, but we are due!

Matthew has been in the Philippines all week and I have been keeping my head above the water, some days barely!

My poor little Dylan was still sleepy after the last time I posted. She started sleeping all day and not even getting up at all. I would just wake her to change her a few times a day. I fed her a little through the tube (yay for the tube!) and then would wash her face, do her hair and change her jammies. Then I would warm up her blankets in the dryer and tuck her right back in bed.

Melissa came over on Tuesday because we were out of milk... oh sure, she could have picked it up for me, but I needed out of the house and I had a few packages to mail. It just so happened that while she was here Dr. Neuro called with the results of the blood draw, liver function test that Matthew had taken her in for the week of Thanksgiving. He liver looked good (better than last time actually...). She asked about the seizures and I told her that she was still having the spasms but I was not ready to make a call yet on if she was going to continually have them because she has been so sick. I mentioned that she has been very sleepy and I think she is sleeping off a virus. I had spoken with Dr. Ped's nurse on Monday and we had decided if she didn't get better by Wed we would go in.She wasn't having trouble breathing or anything and Trina had just looked at her ears. Dr. Neuro got very concerned and told me that the seizure meds restrict the body's ability to clean the ammonia from the blood. One of the symptoms of it is lethargy. Yikes! She said she would like to have D. Ped take a look at her and see if it's just a virus or if he thinks it's something more and she needs to have blood work done. All the while saying how bad the bug that's going around really is.

So I called Dr. Ped to see if I could get her in. Of course he was booked all the rest of the day and he's not in on Wed. The nurse I talked to was not the regular nurse of his (and the one I had talked to the previous day), she said she would talk to his nurse and someone will call me back. I gave her my cel phone and Elvis left the building as planned. Dr.Ped's nurse called me back for more details and then said she would talk to Dr. Ped and call me back again. I told her that she was not acting out of the ordinary from what I would expect her to do when she is really sick. So what do you do? She called me back and said they could get me in in 25 minutes if I can make it. I could... but so much for Melissa coming and just holding Grey while the other kids are taking their naps! Now they would for sure all wake up on her watch! Melissa covered herself and her girls and said she could stay.

So I took the pickle in. And we waited and waited and I sat and listened to some people across the hall get all uppity and "in your face" with our beloved Dr. Ped. Chill people, just chill. They weren't angry at him, but it was like a counselling session for the whole family (there were like 7 adults in the room and one screaming child at what he and I thought would just be a random well-child check...). Needless to say it was interesting listen to Dr. Ped handle them with kit gloves while he pulled them down from their tree. So, he was running late to boot!

He looked Dylan over and listened and she held her breath while he tried to listen to her (It's what she does!). He just waited and figures that she can't hold her breath forever. Clear lungs, moving on to the ears. Full blown ugly nasty ear infection in the right side, red and fluid on the left. She has an ear infection, and a doozy. In hindsight maybe I should of had Trina come check them again Monday? To go from red and a little fluid but not bad to a full blown puss fest in three days is pretty impressive... and unexpected. So I won't beat myself up tooooo bad here, and hopefully Trina won't either. Who knew? So from Dr. Ped's perspective, it's not JUST a virus, she has ear infections. Is it more? We sat and stared at each other for a minute and he said he thinks I should take her in. To which I threw my hands up and went "Ohhhh! Noooo!" and he, having already got up to get his prescription pad, sat back down again. Whooops! He asked what I meant and I told him that I think it's the virus and now, the infections, BUT if I were him, of course I would have it checked! Of course I would, just to be on the safe side because how do you know? You just don't know with her! And he said "Well, but you do know." Me, embarrassed, flattered... He said I know her more well than anyone else and that has gotten us pretty far just yet. He said he was okay not going in tonight but maybe wait until Wednesday with a low threshold of tolerance with her lethargy. He got his script pad, gave us Cefdinir for the infection and a script to take to the lab for the blood test.

Oh the pressure! I have to decide now what to do! What if I am wrong? What if I am right and we go and torture her for no reason? Ultimately I decided to give it a day. 24 hours on antibiotics and now pain meds which, regretfully, I hadn't been giving her at all. 24 hours on meds can go a long way.

So that night, after pain meds she perked up a little... then the next morning there was some good signs. She woke up early for food. Shoot, she even made it to the end of the hall before passing out! Angie came over to let me clean and by the time I ran the kids to school Dylan was back asleep. Maybe napping? She then napped for six hours and I made the call. Off to the lab we go. I woke her up to get some fluids in her, she was adorable, she kept acting like she hasn't seen us in FOREVER! Getting so excited and smiley.

Again, Melissa rearranged her schedule and came over so I could go. My attempts at hydrating her failed. It took two pokes, one in the side of her hand and and another in her wrist. Boo. She was so sad.

After we got home and Melissa left I called Dr. Neuro to let her know that I had taken her in. She looked it up and already one test was back, her Depakote level, and it looked fine. (I think the liver cleans this drug out of the blood so a high level would indicate a poorly functioning liver.) We would wait for the other tests.

In the meantime, another HPE child was a sleeping beauty of her own! Her parents had her admitted and the doctors had been stumped for days. They finally determined that she had gotten a virus that caused her sodium to go completely out of control and the only time she was awake was when her sodium levels were normal. They kept trying to treat it, causing her sodium to yo-yo. They finally backed off to try and let it normalize itself. Dylan does not have DI problems normally but they do have to use the low sodium drip when she has an IV so you never know... Did they check her sodium?

I called the doctor on Thursday morning and he had the full blood work up done! Not only did her liver look fine, he sodium did as well. Nothing looked out of place. Baby girl just wanted to sleep it off! Always good to be sure with her. What an adventure! We haven't had a good scare with her in over a year, we were due.

Here on Saturday she is almost 100%. I can tell her ears are still bugging her bad. She has sad half of the time she is awake, but she is at least awake! I will take it.

Greyson got the cold he is so stuffy he hasn't slept well the last two nights because he can't breath. At 4:00 this morning I was attacking him with saline drops and a bulb syringe. Worst. Mom. Ever. Just ask him. He will tell you. His snorting about it so sad!

Today is Ian's third birthday! Is that crazy?! Three! It is crazy! He is so excited to be "tree" that he has been telling anyone who will listen that he was already three all week long. Unless he is joking around and then he said "Ian's five, brother is two!" Trading him and Duncan's ages. He fancies himself a comedian. He has been great about going to the bathroom on the potty, too great... it's a novelty and the novelty is driving me bonkers but I am not complaining. I am not complaining. He always says "My do it!" or "No need help!" I can't imagine how his underwear would be on if left on his own so I at least try to show him the right way! Little turkey.

If asked the birthday questions, this is how I am sure he would answer:
Favorite food: Waffles - But he also loves broccoli, mac and cheese, hot dogs and fruit snacks.
Favorite show: "Christmas show!" Matthew introduced him to the old school classic 'Santa Claus is Coming to Town' and he is an addict! He also loves Team Umizoomi, loves loves. It's not terribly annoying either, kudos kid.
Favorite toy: Whatever anyone else has, especially big brother but the "old baby" too.

We will be loading up the car as a family and going to pick up daddy from the airport tonight. Melissa offered to pick him up and mom offered to stay with the kids but I imagine they will be pretty excited to see him. I might be too, just a little. Don't tell him that though.

Potty Training and the Plague

Last post I totally forgot to mention my shining achievement for the month! Ian is potty trained!

Okay, not really MY shining achievement because he trained himself but it's kind of fun teasing Matthew that I am an awesome potty trainer. We had a total of three #2 accidents over the course of four days and it's done! (I totally threw one pair of undies out, gone, we don't like Wall-e that much!) I told him I would give him m&ms for going ("one for pee, two for poop!") and after about a week he stopped even mentioning them. "I go potty like bruddah! I go potty like daddy!" Boy do we spend a lot of time in the bathroom though!

A lot of washed hands was good though because everyone is SICK! Duncan still has a cough over what happened last week, he was down for the count for two or three days and then his energy (and naughtiness) creeped back. He didn't go to school at all last week, not a single day. School is a very necessary outlet and mommy at least, missed school very much!

Ian and Asher are both very gunky but they did not lose their voice like Duncan did. We had to buy a new humidifier since we had one already running in Duncan and Ian's room. So off I went to the store. We have the frog one and we got the elephant... They are so cute. And they work like CRAZY. We will walk into the room and there will be a cloud. Worth the money!

Ian has been puking too. I thought it was because he had started to puke when he was angry at us (starting Friday night a week ago) but now I think he was just getting sick and he wasn't able to handle the throat irritation. Hard to say since he seems to know when it's coming but he has a super sensitive gag reflex. The kid gags when I touch his ear with a q-tip, how crazy is that? He has had quite a few massive pukes. It's never good when you drive by a house with a mom shaking thinks off in the front yard. Feel bad for her. Gross gross gross.

One day Ian had three baths, and that was when we couldn't just wipe things up and clean off. Explosions required baths. Just don't lose track of Asher when someone is in the bath because he ends up in the tub with them! Fully clothed! Yes, it happened again, but my pictures didn't turn out well. I was trying to grab the camera mid-clothes shake off.

Dylan is down for the count. I think Saturday she was up a total of about four hours. I didn't even see the whites of her eyes until about 1:00 in the afternoon! Yesterday only two. Today I woke her up at about 1:00 to change and cath her, wash her face, but she didn't appreciate it much. Went back to sleep. She was coughing and sputtering about when she was awake on Sunday, happier sleeping I guess. I think she is pulling a page from her NICU time and sleeping through the suck. Nice coping mechanism and when not tantalized by toys and TV like a "typical" person you would sleep too! Yesterday when I woke her to change her clothes and diaper and I sat and brushed her hair as long as the boys would let me (they were eating a cupcake from the neighbor) and then I laid her in her bed and she was just quietly looking around, not wanting to move. I turned off the light and she went back to sleep. It's sad... I may or may not have teared up a little about how sad she is and looks.

One day her eyes were so purple it looked like she was wearing purple eyeshadow! I am not sure what is more comfortable, AFOs on or off... I think off when she is sleeping but on when she is awake? I think it's frustrating to not be able to stand or walk as easily? She gets around okay, don't get me wrong... I just want to make sure she is comfy. Thankfully she can take big kid cough medicine now (four is the magic number) and so we have been giving it to her. This cold comes with a low grade fever and a massive loss of appetite so she has gotten a little bit of food very slowly. Yay for the button! I will give her a couple doses of Hydrocortisone just in case she is stressed and not able to fend it off.

During this last week I was especially appreciative to be able to stay home with my sick kids even though everyone was getting a bit of cabin fever. The kids are SICK, way sick. No school, no leaving the house, no visitors, no sitters. What in the world do parents where one doesn't stay at home? Send their sick kids to school? I would! So I am grateful that I can be here with them while they are sick and to save the world from them even though we likely shared with family on the prior weekend!

Aunt Trina has also been very sick but she is finally in the mend and she came over to look at Asher's ears because he has been crying several times a night. Or waking around 4:00 and playing like he did the other night. She ended up going down the row and checking ears and lungs and Dylan was the only one with a sketchy ear but she could get over it, it's just irritated. Big thanks to Aunt Trina again for not making us leave the house and it was a nice visit as well. I think she could tell Duncan had cabin fever!

Thankfully mom, dad and Greyson are clear as of yet... Knocking on wood every time I walk by it. If mama gets sick we are in big trouble and sweet Greyson isn't quite three month yet which apparently is the first magic age for fevers and stuff.

Yesterday while I was getting the kids into naps I set Greyson on the floor right in front of the couch and he just went to sleep! Right there... In the middle of the room. When I got done I picked him up for a snuggle and told him that he didn't have to sleep on the floor.

Ian has been totally in to the old school "Santa Claus is Coming to Town". He is constantly asking for the Christmas show. I am not sure what is better this or Alvin and the Chipmunks, Chipwrecked which has also been on the favorite list. They quote Alive and the Chipmunks and sing all the songs, it's hilarious. That said, I am sure daddy is proud his boy likes the classics.

Matthew put up our Christmas lights in the yard (more than ever!) and put up the decorations inside the house but we haven't yet gotten a tree. I think we will soon... I am not looking forward to Asher the Destroyer meeting the Christmas tree though. Is that bad? Not so into that part!

One of my sweet boys turns three next week! *tear Not ready for this sweet little guy to hit another birthday! Instead of saying Asher's name Shy-ya, he calls him Sher-sher. Asher is even starting to say his name that way!

Totally slacking on the pictures this week, I have been making ornaments like crazy. People really dig them. And, my Aunt Jane has more faith in me than I do, she has been requesting all kinds of wacky stuff. Well, that and you don't want to see a picture of a bunch of sick kids, lethargic and runny red noses!
